چکیده

[1] Th deficit and excess were examined in the upper 500 m of the Southern Ocean from Sub-Antarctic to Seasonal Ice Zones (Australian sector) during austral spring 2001. Th fluxes at 100 m indicate that particle export was low in the North (46.9–51.0 S), minimal in the Polar and Inter-Polar Frontal Zones and high in the South ( 61 S). These results are in tight agreement with new production estimates from the same cruise. Our data indicate that Polar and Inter-Polar Frontal Zones were not zones of intense export in the Australian sector at this time of year, in contrast with other sectors of the Southern Ocean. Also, we highlight the usefulness of Th excess below the mixed layer as a tool to study mesopelagic remineralization.

A time - series study of particulate matter export in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre based on 234 Th : 238 U disequilibrium

Depth profiles of total Th (dissolved+particulate) were collected at Station ALOHA (22145N, 158100W) in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre during 9 cruises from April 1999 to March 2000. Samples were collected and processed by a new 2L technique that enables more detailed depth resolution then previous Th studies. Significant zones of particle export (Th deficiency) and particle remineralizatio...

Particle flux in the oceans: Challenging the steady state assumption

Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are strongly controlled by the depth at which the organic matter that sinks out of the surface ocean is remineralized. This depth is generally estimated from particle flux profiles measured using sediment traps. Inherent in this analysis is a steady state assumption that export from the surface does not significantly change in the time it takes material to reac...

Carbon export and transfer to depth across the Southern Ocean Great Calcite Belt

Sequestration of carbon by the marine biological pump depends on the processes that alter, remineralize, and preserve particulate organic carbon (POC) during transit to the deep ocean. Here, we present data collected from the Great Calcite Belt, a calcite-rich band across the Southern Ocean surface, to compare the transformation of POC in the euphotic and mesopelagic zones of the water column. ...

Ferrioxamine Siderophores Detected amongst Iron Binding Ligands Produced during the Remineralization of Marine Particles

The microbial degradation of marine particles is an important process in the remineralization of nutrients including iron. As part of the GEOTRACES process study (FeCycle II), we conducted incubation experiments with marine particles obtained from 30 to 100m depth at two stations during austral spring in the subtropical waters east of the North Island of New Zealand. The particles were collecte...

Early spring mesopelagic carbon remineralization and transfer efficiency in the naturally iron-fertilized Kerguelen area

We report on the zonal variability of mesopelagic particulate organic carbon remineralization and deep carbon transfer potential during the Kerguelen Ocean and Plateau compared Study 2 expedition (KEOPS 2; October– November 2011) in an area of the polar front supporting recurrent massive blooms from natural Fe fertilization. Mesopelagic carbon remineralization (MR) was assessed using the excess...
